Movie Review #32 She's Out My League

-->
She’s Out of My League (2010) Jay Baruchel, Alice Eve Directed by Jim Field Smith

The first good comedy of 2010 has arrived in the form of She’s Out of My League. Though the film is not a “Hard 10” as the taglines would suggest, it is a good solid 6, with a fun story, smart cast (with several new faces that stand out), and a very solid soundtrack. Relative new-comer in the director roll (he’s been an actor and comedy writer for some time), Jim Field Smith does a nice job with his first widescreen release. He allows his new actors to drive the story and deliver some memorable funny lines that should stick with you awhile (a la Anchorman…though not that good). It should keep you laughing throughout and it is a very solid date movie.

She’s Out of My League is the story of Kirk (played very well by Jay Baruchel), a lovable loser who lacks confidence and let’s himself get pushed around by his family. After a good deed he ends up dating a “hard 10” girl in the form of Molly (played well by Alice Eve, who does a “Cameron Diaz-like” (at least in There’s Something About Mary) job in being both cool and really hot). Well not shockingly none of his family or friends can believe that a girl like Molly would go with a guy like Kirk, and the comedy ensues. Kirk’s best friend, Stainer is a funny character (played memorably by T.J. Miller) and Molly’s best friend Patty (played solid by Krysten Ritter) drive a lot of the best funny moments in the film. Though the film is predictable, and is really nothing more than an oddball romantic comedy, it does have some surprising depth within the story, and enough funny moments that it is never slow or boring. I highly recommend this for some good comedy-goodness and I promise you won’t look at your watch and you won’t be disappointed.

(The Shawshank Scale 1-10) A very beautiful Alice Eve, some faulty-ejaculation comedy-gold moments, a solid soundtrack, and an actually honest and sweet story in the end let She’s Out of My League earn a very commendable 6.0 on the Shawshank Scale. The first good comedy of the year.
Food For Thought: Up next for Alice Eve is Sex and the City 2 and then The First Avenger: Captain America…so she is busy. Jay Baruchel does some voice work in the currently out How to Train Your Dragon, and later this year can be seen in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
